Turtle Trax; Clara the Sea Turtle

Hannah gives Clara her name...

All the sculptural elements made Day 1, fired Day 2

Day 2 Day 2, painting starts, ceramics fired.

Day 3 Day 3 some ceramics epoxied on, more painting.

Day4 Day 4 same as Day 3...

Day 5 Day 5
Day 5 working from top down to finish details.

Day 6 Day 6

Day 6 More detailing, all little fish now have eyes! Getting hard to see progress in these pictures as they don't show detail, so have added a close-up.

Day 7 Day 7

Day 7 All detailing and trying to fill in the hundreds of pin holes in the paint, caused by pinholes in the fiberglass shell. Bits of tweeking were also done over the weekend, and the last 5% will be fine tuning details over the next 2 weeks up until the matte final coat to prep it for the auto-body shop to finish coat it. A small school of yellow fish was added to the base, but glare from the flash keeps washing out this part of pics.
Over all, I have used hand made ceramic add-ons, beads, and shells; as well as acrylic paints ('normal' as well as florescent, glow-in-the-dark, and iridescent). This gives it a lot of interest as lighting and perspectives change.

These are daily log pics of Clara. they represent work days, not calendar days, due to prior committments.
Sand is not as yellow in 'real' life! Some fish are sculptural, some are 2D.

I have been a 'professional' artist for 30 years, having received my first commision at 16. My original media and focus was hand-sculpted ceramics, and I have always enjoyed experimenting with new media and subjects.

I also often like my art to be 'fun'. I often want people to look at my work and have it just cause them to relax and smile.

Clara. (as named by my young great-niece Hannah) is a true 'sea' turtle. Her paint scheme is meant to reflect in a bright an cheerful way, a colorful ocean environment. I have added on lots of sculptural bits to give it more interest in various lighting; as well as using some special acrylic paints...metallic, florescent, iridescent, and even a little glow-in-the-dark! Towards her upper flipper, it is light like looking from under water towards the sun. As you scan downward, it becomes more intense blues, then seguing into a sandy bottom, with blue wave patterns dappling the ochre.

Clara gets to Velde Ford for her gloss coat and meets up with 2 others...turtle wax?!?
